Names of the Week – Ariadne & Gideon

WeeklyNames

This weeks names are:
Ariadne & Gideon

Today I thought it would be fun to include my thoughts on how I picture a person with each of this weeks names!

Greek Goddess Ariadne by George Frederick Watts

Ariadne is a wonderful, whimsical Greek name, meaning “most holy”.   Ariadne is the name of a Greek goddess as well as a Saint.  I imagine this name on a very spirited and animated woman.  Physically I think an Ariadne could have olive skin, bright eyes, and delicate little bird-like features. There is something playful about this name that I think makes it suitable to someone with pixie or elvish features.  My mental image of an Ariadne is quite different from that of George Frederick Watts’ depiction of the Greek Goddess (pictured on the right).

Gideon was a popular name among early settlers that is coming back into fashion.  A great Biblical figure, Gideon is a Hebrew name meaning “hewer; one who cuts down”.  I could see this name on someone that has a strong moral compass with a committed to peace and justice.  I picture a Gideon being tall, with a barrel chest, deep brow, and piercing dark eyes.  Not quite the same as the fan’s portrayal the of Harry Potter character Gideon Prewett with red-hair and lanky limbs (pictured right).
