Rugrats was one of the few shows that I, born in the 1980s, and my baby brother, born in the 1990s could agree to watch together. If you were born in the 80s or 90s chances are you’re also familiar with baby Tommy and his family and friends. Let’s take a trip down memory name and look at the cool names from Nickelodeon’s Rugrats.
Thomas “Tommy” Malcolm Pickles
Tommy is the Rugrats lovable and adventurous main character. Tommy was named after the son of Paul Germain, one of the show’s creators. Thomas Malcolm is a handsome and noble name choice even paired with the quirky and fun surname Pickles.
Thomas is an Aramaic name meaning twin. Currently ranked at Number 51, Thomas has always been a well loved name, never dipping below Number 63.
Dylan “Dil” Prescott Pickles
Baby Dil is Tommy’s little brother. You can see the Rugrats writer’s had a sense of humor in naming him Dil Pickles. Dylan Prescott is another strong combo that modern parents could easily use.
Currently ranked at Number 27, Dylan has been in the Top 50 for the past 25 years. Dylan is a handsome Welsh name meaning son of the sea. Dylan is also rising for girls and peaked in popularity for girls last year at Number 397.
Charles “Chuckie” Crandall Finster III
Chuckie is one of Tommy’s dearest little friends. He didn’t get the same cool nickname as his Dad “Chas”, but somehow Chuckie seems to fit him best.
Charles is a classic French name that comes from a German name meaning free man. From 1900-1954 Charles was in the Top 10. Today Charles is still readily used at Number 50 and has never ranked lower than Number 63.
Phillip “Phil” Richard Bill DeVille
Phil is one part of the dynamic duo of twins Phil and Lil. Phillip Richard is quite a classic sounding name, but again we see the writer’s humor come out in the second part of his rhyming name, Bill DeVille.
Phillip is a Greek name with one of my favorite meanings, lover of horses. A great name for an equestrian lover, Phillip is currently Number 410 in popularity, just 24 spaces ahead of Philip which ranks at Number 434.
Lillian “Lil” Marie Jill DeVille
Lil is the second part of the lovable twins Phil and Lil. Lillian Marie is a fairly popular name combination, however those silly writer’s amuse us once more with the later part of her rhyming name, Jill DeVille.
Lillian is a lovely English name meaning Lily. A popular name at the turn of the century, Lillian reentered the Top 100 in 2002 and is currently ranked at Number 26.
Angelica Charlotte Pickles
Love her or hate her Angelica is Tommy and Dil’s older sassy cousin. Many adults still strongly associate this name with this often bratty little character. Did Angelica Pickles spoil this name for you?
Angelica is a Latin name meaning angelic. Angelica has never been too popular, peaking in 1996 when it reached spot Number 97. Today Angelica is ranked at Number 425.
Kimiko “Kimi” Watanabe-Finster
Kimi is Chuckie’s step-sister. While Kimi can be a nickname for many names, Kimiko is a great choice and one of my favorite names from this show.
Kimiko (pronounced kee-mee-ko) is a Japanese name meaning beautiful, noble, or valuable child. Kimiko has never been in the US Top 1,000 and was only given to 14 little girls last year.
Susanna “Susie” Yvonne Carmichael
Susie is one of the children’s neighborhood friend’s that often goes head-to-head with Angelica. Her name fits in with her parents who also go by nicknames ending in the “e” sound.
Susanna is Greek from a Hebrew name meaning lily. Like similar names Susannah and Suzanne, Susanna is no longer in the Top 1,000. Only 190 little girls were given the first name Susanna last year.
Stuart “Stu” Pickles
Stu is Tommy and Dil’s Dad.
Stuart is an English and Scottish occupational name referring to a person who was a house steward. Notice that this names his Stu Pickles? Heehee.

Diane “Didi” Kropotkin Kerpackter-Pickles
Didi is Tommy and Dil’s Mom.
Diane is another name that has fallen out of popularity. Peaking in the early 1950’s when Diane was a Top 20 name, last year only 92 little girls were named Diane. Diane is a French form of the name Diana meaning divine or heavenly.
Louis “Lou” Kalhern Pickles II
Lou is Tommy, Dil, and Angelica’s Grandpa.
Louis is a German and French name meaning renowned warrior. Commonly pronounced LOO-ee and LOO-is, Louis is still readily used ranked at Number 297.
Louise “Lulu” Jonston
Lulu is Grandpa Lou’s second wife.
Grandpa Louis and Grandma Louise share very similar names!
Louise is a feminine form of Louis and shares the meaning renowned warrior. Nicknames like Lulu and Lulie endear me to Louise. No longer in the Top 1,000 only 240 little girls were named Louise in 2015.
Andrew “Drew” Pickles
Drew is Stu’s brother and Angelica’s Dad.
Andrew is a classic Greek name meaning strong and manly. Andrew has been a popular name for many years, currently ranked at Number 30, Andrew was a Top 10 name from 1986-2007.
Charlotte Cilia McSell
Charlotte is Angelica’s Mom and fittingly Angelica’s middle name is Charlotte.
Charlotte is a classy French feminine form of Charles meaning renowned warrior. Charlotte has been steadily climbing the charts and first entered the Top 10 in 2014. Currently ranked at Number 9, I expect Charlotte to continue to rise in popularity.
Elizabeth “Betty” Gizelle
Betty is Phil & Lil’s Mom.
Elizabeth is the epitome of a timeless name to me. I must confess it’s my own middle name and high on my own personal favorites list. A Hebrew name meaning pledged to God, Elizabeth currently ranks at Number 13. Elizabeth has never dipped below Number 26 in popularity. One of my favorite things about this name is its many delightful nickname options.
Howard “Howie” DeVille
Howie is Phil and Lil’s Dad.
I don’t come across many little Howard’s and chance are you don’t either since it was only given to 192 baby boys last year. Howard is derived from a German and English surname meaning brave heart or high guardian. Do you think Howard is due for a comeback?
Charles Norbert “Chas” Finster Sr.
Chas is Chuckie’s Dad.
Two Charles’ and a Charlotte in this fun cast of characters. Chas or Chaz is a diminutive of Charles and a lesser used option than the classic Charlie. Other cool variants of Charles include Charleston, Carlos and Carlo.
Kira is Kimi’s Mom and Chas’s wife.
Kira is a Russian feminine form of the name Cyrus meaning throne. Kira may also be a variant of the Irish Ciara meaning dark or black. There are numerous spellings of Kira within the Top 1,000. Kira currently ranks at Number 361.
Dr. Lucille “Lucy” Carmichael
Lucy is Susie’s Mom.
Lucia, Lucy, and Lucille are all rising in popularity. At Number 283 Lucille hasn’t been this popular since the 1950s. Lucille is a French form of Lucilla meaning light.
Lucille Ball played a character named Lucy Carmichael on The Lucy Show.
Randall Randolph “Randy” Carmichael
Randy is Lucy’s husband and Susie’s dad. Randall Randolph certainly is a mouthful.
Randall is an English name meaning shield-wolf that peaked in 1955. Randall just fell out of the Top 1,000 last year and was only used by 193 little boys last year.
