Little People, Big Names

lpbn

The Roloff Family became household names with their TLC show Little People, Big World which follows a family of six, three of which have dwarfism. The Roloff parents have separated since the show aired but the family continues to grow as all four of the children are in relationships and the two eldest sons have become father’s themselves. Let’s take a look at names from this growing little family!

The Roloff Parents

Matthew “Matt” James Roloff
Matthew James Roloff is the patriarch of the Roloff bunch. Matthew is a timeless Hebrew name meaning gift of God.  Matthew was ranked at Number 59 in 1961 when Roloff was born, though today its much more commonly used at Number 15. The Spanish variant Mateo is also on the rise. Matthew ranks within the Top 100 in Australia, Canada, England and Wales, Ireland, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Matt is currently dating Caryn Chandler.

Amy Jo Knight Roloff
Amy Jo Knight, Matt’s ex-wife, is the Roloff matriarch. Amy is a French name meaning beloved that peaked in 1976 when it was the Number 2 girls name in the US. Amy ranked at Number 44 the year Roloff was born and today comes in at spot Number 176. We may be hearing Amy more as a nickname as Amelia climbs the charts. Amy could also work as a nickname to Amandine, Amaryllis, Amelie, Amethyst, and Amity. Amy is currently dating Chris Marek.

The Roloff Kids

Jeremy James Roloff
The twin brothers Jeremy and Zach are the eldest. Jeremy James, who sometimes goes by the nickname “Jer,” shares the same middle name as his father. Jeremy is an English form of the Hebrew name Jeremiah meaning appointed by God. Jeremy ranked at Number 40 in 1990 when Roloff was born, but has since declined in popularity currently ranked at Number 184. I’ve always been fond of the name Jeremy and believe it could be more appealing to modern parents with the nickname “Remy.”

Zachary Luke “Zach” Roloff
Zachary Luke, predominantly called “Zach,” is the other twin in duo of Zach and Jeremy. Zachary is a Hebrew name meaning God has remembered. Zachary peaked in the mid 1990’s just a few years after Roloff was given his name in 1990 when it was Number 22. Today Zachary ranks at Number 90, the lowest its been since the late 1970s.

Molly Jo Roloff Silvius
Molly Jo is the only girl in the bunch and she shares her the middle name Jo with her mother. Molly is a sweet, wholesome sounding diminutive of the Hebrew name Mary meaning bitter. Molly ranked at Number 87 in 1993 when Roloff Silvius was born and today comes in at Number 157. Molly has a special place in my heart as it reminds me of American Girl doll and character Molly McIntire.

Jacob George Roloff
Jacob, who sometimes goes by “Jake”, is the youngest of the Roloff siblings. Jacob is a well-loved Hebrew name meaning supplanter that is currently the Number 7 boys name in the US. Jacob ranked at Number 2 in 1997 when Roloff was born. Jacob was the most popular boys name from 1999-2007, so chances are you know a Jacob or two.

The Roloff Kids Partners

Audrey Mirabella Botti Roloff
Jeremy Roloff married Audrey Mirabella Botti in September 2014. Doesn’t Audrey Mirabella sound like a name straight from a name-lover’s favorites list? Audrey is an English name meaning noble strength that reminds many of the lovely and classy Audrey Hepburn. Audrey ranked at Number 169 in 1991 when Roloff was born but has been steadily climbing the charts, today ranked at Number 39.

Victoria Elizabeth “Tori” Patton Roloff
Zach Roloff married Victoria Elizabeth “Tori” Patton in July 2015. Victoria almost exclusively goes by the nickname Tori, though her given name, Victoria Elizabeth is quite regal. Victoria has long been a classic name in the US, ranking at Number 28 in 1991 when Roloff was born and today at Number 21. Victoria is a Latin name meaning victory that could also lend itself to the nicknames Ria, Rori, Tora, Via, and of course Vicky.

amyjo

Joel Silvius
Molly Roloff Silvius married Joel Silvius is August 2017. Joel and Molly share the same birthday, how sweet is that? Joel is a Hebrew name meaning God has remembered. Joel was Number 101 in 1993 when Silvius was born and has dropped just a bit in popularity to 166, making it still a well loved name.  I particularly like Joel in the middle name spot and think it makes a nice alternative or way to honor a Joseph.

rockroloff

Isabel Sofia Garreton Rock
Jacob Roloff has been dating Isabel “Izzy” Rock for a couple of years. I have to point out the fun Twilight name connection of Jacob and Isabel (close to Isabella). Isabel seems is such a delight and the couple have had fun with their names calling themselves “Rock and Roloff.” I’m unsure of Isabel’s birth-date, though if she was born in 1997 like Jacob, her name would have ranked at 141 then and ranks at 145 now. Isabel is a variant of the classic Elizabeth meaning pledged to God.

The Roloff Grandkids

babyj

Jackson Kyle Roloff
On May 12, 2017 Zach and Tori welcomed the first Roloff grandchild, Jackson Kyle. Jackson is affectionately called “Baby J” by his family occasionally. Jackson is an English name meaning son of Jack that currently ranks at Number 17 in popularity. The popularity of Jackson is a bit deceiving though because there are multiple spelling variations within the Top 1,000.

ember

Ember Jean Roloff
On September 10, 2017 Jeremy and Audrey welcomed the first Roloff granddaughter named Ember Jean.  Ember is a word name referring to a coal glowing on a fire. Ember just entered the US Top 1,000 in 2009 and peaked last year at Number 320 in popularity.

8Arthur.jpg

Welcome to #Namemas, a collaborative name celebration and Christmas Countdown.

On the 8th day of Namemas TulipbyAnyName gave to me the baby name Arthur.

Arthur Claus is the main character, voiced by James McAvoy, in the sweet animated film Arthur Christmas.

Arthur is a strong classic name that that fits in well with the old-is-new again trend of names making a comeback.  Currently ranked at Number 292 in popularity, Arthur has steadily been on the rise the past 15 years.  Arthur has a strong and manly sound, in large due to the association of Arthurian legend.  Arthur is a Celtic name meaning bear, how cute is that? If you like the idea of Arthur you may also like its international variations – Spanish and Italian Arturo, Scottish Artair, or Artur used in a range of countries from Germany to Romania.

What do you think of the name Arthur? Hear my thoughts below:

Names from Rugrats

rugratsnames

Rugrats was one of the few shows that I, born in the 1980s, and my baby brother, born in the 1990s could agree to watch together. If you were born in the 80s or 90s chances are you’re also familiar with baby Tommy and his family and friends. Let’s take a trip down memory name and look at the cool names from Nickelodeon’s Rugrats.

The Kids

Tommy
Thomas “Tommy” Malcolm Pickles
Tommy is the Rugrats lovable and adventurous main character.  Tommy was named after the son of Paul Germain, one of the show’s creators.  Thomas Malcolm is a handsome and noble name choice even paired with the quirky and fun surname Pickles.
Thomas is an Aramaic name meaning twin.  Currently ranked at Number 51, Thomas has always been a well loved name, never dipping below Number 63.

Dil
Dylan “Dil” Prescott Pickles
Baby Dil is Tommy’s little brother.  You can see the Rugrats writer’s had a sense of humor in naming him Dil Pickles.  Dylan Prescott is another strong combo that modern parents could easily use.
Currently ranked at Number 27, Dylan has been in the Top 50 for the past 25 years.  Dylan is a handsome Welsh name meaning son of the sea.  Dylan is also rising for girls and peaked in popularity for girls last year at Number 397.

Phillip is a Greek name with one of my favorite meanings, lover of horses.  A great name for an equestrian lover, Phillip is currently Number 410 in popularity, just 24 spaces ahead of Philip which ranks at Number 434.

Lil
Lillian “Lil” Marie Jill DeVille
Lil is the second part of the lovable twins Phil and Lil.  Lillian Marie is a fairly popular name combination, however those silly writer’s amuse us once more with the later part of her rhyming name, Jill DeVille.
Lillian is a lovely English name meaning Lily.  A popular name at the turn of the century, Lillian reentered the Top 100 in 2002 and is currently ranked at Number 26.

Angelica
Angelica Charlotte Pickles
Love her or hate her Angelica is Tommy and Dil’s older sassy cousin. Many adults still strongly associate this name with this often bratty little character.  Did Angelica Pickles spoil this name for you?
Angelica is a Latin name meaning angelic.  Angelica has never been too popular, peaking in 1996 when it reached spot Number 97.  Today Angelica is ranked at Number 425.

Kimi
Kimiko “Kimi” Watanabe-Finster
Kimi is Chuckie’s step-sister. While Kimi can be a nickname for many names, Kimiko is a great choice and one of my favorite names from this show.
Kimiko (pronounced kee-mee-ko) is a Japanese name meaning beautiful, noble, or valuable child. Kimiko has never been in the US Top 1,000 and was only given to 14 little girls last year.

Susanna “Susie” Yvonne Carmichael
Susie is one of the children’s neighborhood friend’s that often goes head-to-head with Angelica.  Her name fits in with her parents who also go by nicknames ending in the “e” sound.

Lulu
Louise “Lulu” Jonston

Drew
Andrew “Drew” Pickles
Drew is Stu’s brother and Angelica’s Dad.
Andrew is a classic Greek name meaning strong and manly.  Andrew has been a popular name for many years, currently ranked at Number 30, Andrew was a Top 10 name from 1986-2007.

Charlotte
Charlotte Cilia McSell
Charlotte is Angelica’s Mom and fittingly Angelica’s middle name is Charlotte.
Charlotte is a classy French feminine form of Charles meaning renowned warrior.  Charlotte has been steadily climbing the charts and first entered the Top 10 in 2014.  Currently ranked at Number 9, I expect Charlotte to continue to rise in popularity.

Betty
Elizabeth “Betty” Gizelle
Betty is Phil & Lil’s Mom.
Elizabeth is the epitome of a timeless name to me.  I must confess it’s my own middle name and high on my own personal favorites list.  A Hebrew name meaning pledged to God, Elizabeth currently ranks at Number 13. Elizabeth has never dipped below Number 26 in popularity.  One of my favorite things about this name is its many delightful nickname options.

Howie
Howard “Howie” DeVille
Howie is Phil and Lil’s Dad.
I don’t come across many little Howard’s and chance are you don’t either since it was only given to 192 baby boys last year.  Howard is derived from a German and English surname meaning brave heart or high guardian.  Do you think Howard is due for a comeback?

Lucille Ball played a character named Lucy Carmichael on The Lucy Show.

Randy
Randall Randolph “Randy” Carmichael
