June is in bloom and this month we’ll look to celebrities for a beautiful batch of M Names!
Child star Mae Whitman is all grown up now. The actress, born Mae Margaret Whitman, celebrates her birthday on June 9th. Mae is a simple sweet little diminutive of Margaret meaning pearl. Ranked at 554 in popularity, Mae is one we see more frequently in the middle name spot. Actor Mae West gave this wholesome name a sultry spin.
Child star turned fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen shares her June 13th birthday with twin sister Ashley. Mary-Kate is a double barrel name, two names pronounced together. Mary is a Hebrew name meaning biter and Kate is a Greek name meaning pure, two very different meanings but very timeless names.
Film star Marilyn Monroe has become more iconic in her death than in her life. Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson on June 1st. Monroe is a unisex Scottish surname meaning mouth of the river roe and currently ranks at Number 603 for girls in the U.S. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon choose the name Monroe for their little star born in 2001.
Actor, director, and legendary voice Morgan Freeman celebrates his birthday on June 1st. A Welsh name meaning sea circle, Morgan took the lead as a girls name through the 80’s and 90’s. Currently Number 744 for boys and 164 for girls, Morgan could be prime for a revival amungst the fellas. Imagine a schoolyard of little male Kelly’s and Morgan’s running around.
With a name like Wentworth its easy to overlook Miller as a surname. Actor Wentworth Miller was born on June 2nd. Miller is one of those very normal surname names that makes for a more unusual and interesting first name. If the beer association doesn’t both you, you may love Miller in a sea of Connor and Parker’s. Miller is and English occupational name for a grain grinder that currently ranks at Number 871.
Actor Minka Kelly, born June 24th, is one of the few people who has such a distinct first name that she could go by it alone – think Beyonce, Whoopi, Adele, Drake, you get where I’m going here. Minka is a Polish name rarely seen in the US that means strong. Less common than Mila or Mika, Minka has a spunky vibe.
Which of these M names delight you?
Latin meaning “damn”
Mysterious. Mythical. Melodic.
Aurora is a lightly exotic beauty that has swiftly been climbing the charts. Currently ranked at Number 44, Aurora is more popular now than ever. In Alaska Aurora was the most popular name given to baby girls in 2018. Aurora is unique in her diversity. She’s a mythological name, a nature name, a Disney name, and a Southern belle name, which have all contributed to her recent rise in usage.
According to ancient Roman mythology Aurora was the goddess of the morning. Fittingly, Aurora has Latin roots and means dawn. You may also connect Aurora to the northern lights , aurora borealis or the southern lights of aurora australis. Two great heavenly ties to this grand name.
In Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Aurora is the beautiful cursed Princess. Aurora has a feminine Princess-worthy flare while still lending herself to the spunk unisex nickname Rory. And who could forget Shirley Maclaine’s portrayal of the character Aurora Greenway in Terms of Endearment?
❤ Sisters to Aurora: Bronwen, Cressida, Genevieve, Scarlet, Tallulah
❤Brothers to Aurora: Dominic, Ezra, Leo, Orion, Roman
❤ Middle Name Suggestions: Aurora Giselle, Aurora Jane, Aurora Lily, Aurora Vivienne, Aurora Winter
❤ Names with a similar vibe to Aurora: Aurelia, Elora, Lorelei, Magnolia, Seraphina
What do you think of the name Aurora?
Let’s warm things up with some baby names inspired by the state of Arizona! Sunny southwestern Arizona is one of the newer US states, the 48th to be added. Arizona’s cities and desert landscapes make for some lovely names chalked full of character.
Let’s start with the place name Arizona, a Native American name meaning small springs. You may recognize Arizona as Jessica Capshaw’s character on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy. Arizona was briefly ranked in the Top 1,000 between 1901-1911. Last year only 115 girls were named Arizona.
Arizona has been nicknamed “The Grand Canyon State.” The Grand Canyon is located in Northern Arizona and is known world-wide for its stunning size and color. Canyon makes for an interesting, underused, yet familiar sounding word name. 130 boys and 8 girls were given the name Canyon last year.
Chandler is a prominent suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. Chandler got its name from veterinary surgeon Dr. Alexander John Chandler. Chandler is a surname and occupational name meaning candle-maker. Chandler is also closely associated with Mathew Perry’s character Chandler Bing from the popular TV show Friends. Chandler is currently ranked at Number 466 for boys and Number 995 for girls.
Copper is the state metal of Arizona which also bears the nickname, “the copper state.” Copper is a beautiful burnished metal that was only used by 30 boys and 11 girls last year. Copper could make for a good alternative to Connor or Carter.
Arizona is most definitely known for its vast desert landscape. Truly an unusual name, it could be a fun word name and lends itself to the cute nicknames Des or Desi. Desert is so rare that it was given to less than 5 babies last year and has never ranked in the US Top 1,000.
Gilbert is a town located in southeast Phoenix, Arizona. Gilbert gets its name from William “Bobby” Gilbert who provided land for the Arizona Eastern Railway. I have a soft spot for the name Gilbert, a beloved character from the Anne of Green Gables series. Gilbert is a German name meaning shining pledge that currently ranks at Number 960.
When you saw this was a list of Arizona themed baby names the name Phoenix was probably one of the first that came to mind. Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and the fifth most populated city in the US. Phoenix is a Greek name meaning dark red and the name of the mythological bird. Phoenix is currently ranked at Number 292 for boys and Number 443 for girls. This name also reminds me of actors River and Joaquin Phoenix.
Prescott is another large city in Arizona. Prescott was named in honor of historian William H. Prescott. Prescott has a crisp, preppy, vintage vibe. An English surname meaning priest’s dwelling, Prescott was only given to 33 boys and 5 girls last year.
Sedona is a breathtakingly beautiful city known for its red sandstorm formations. Sedona was named after the hospitable first postmaster’s wife, Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly. Schnebly’s mother created the name herself, combining sounds she found appealing. 64 girls were given this exotic place name last year.
Turquoise is the gemstone of this beautiful southwestern state. In addition to being a gorgeous bluish-green hue, Turquoise is a French name meaning Turkish stone. An uncommon color name, Turquoise was used by less than five babies last year.
The Most Popular Names in Arizona last year were:
1 Liam (#2 in the US)
2 Noah (#1 in the US)

More on Last Year’s Celebrity Baby Name Trends & My Personal Favorites:
Name inspiration can be found anywhere, even in Pixie Hollow, home of Disney’s Tinker Bell and her fairy friends.
The Main Fairy Characters
Tinker or a tinkerer was a term for a traveler that repaired small items. Tinker does have a bit of a quirky sound, similar to names like Timber or Piper. Bell, a word name and fairly popular surname, makes for a more familiar name choice. Tinker bell does make for an endearing nickname.
Rosetta is one of the many attractive forms of the lovable flower name, Rose. Rosetta is an Italian diminutive of Rosa. Only 49 girls were named Rosetta last year in the U.S.
Zarina sounds perfectly fit for a Princess and has the cool “Z” factor to it. Zarina is a Persian name meaning golden. Zarina rhymes with other lovely names such as Karina and Marina.
Vidia may be a form of Vidya, a Sanskrit name meaning knowledge, science, and learning. Vidia may also be a short form of Ovidia, a Romanian name sheep. Either way Vidia is unexpected and delightful.
Two pretty cool word names come together to create Silvermist. This name is definitely fairy-worthy! Silver is a lustrous color name with a hippie or rock star vibe.
Iridessa comes from the word iridescent, referring to luminous colors that appear to change colors when seen from various points of view. Fittingly, the word iridescent comes from the Latin word Iris, meaning rainbow. Iris could make a cool nickname for Iridessa.
Fawn is an animal name used to describe a young dear. Fawn was briefly in the Top 1,000 in the 1960s and 1970s but was only used by 19 girls last year. I think Fawn would make a great middle name choice.
Periwinkle can be a five-petaled flower with glossy leaves, though it is mostly known as a color in a blue and purple hue. Periwinkle comes from the Middle English word parwynke and would definitely be a whimsical way to get to the nickname Peri.
A few minor fairy friends include…
